Environmental Responsibility & Operations
Rebel takes sustainability seriously
For us, sustainability is action, not just words. When we transformed a closed and dark telegraph building into 27,000 square meters of technology and community, everything from materials to energy use was challenged.
From car to people
From dark underground parking to the city's meeting place
During the renovation of the property in 2021, we made an unconventional choice. Instead of keeping the building's massive underground parking garage reserved for cars, the area was transformed into a center for bustling public life.
Today, the old garage houses a state-of-the-art conference center, restaurant, bar, commercial kitchen, changing rooms and bicycle parking. By giving the rooms new life and opening the building to the city, we create connections between people who would otherwise never have met.
Norwegian real estate industry's Oscar
Winner of the City Prize 2022
Rebel walked away with the 2022 City Prize. In its justification, the jury highlighted our ability to think new things and choose bold solutions within narrow limits.
The project was praised for its high ambitions and demands for social, economic and environmental sustainability. Rebel is developed by Entra, in close collaboration with Mad architects, Krohnark, Cushman & Wakefield Realkapital and SQM.
Green mobility
First-class bicycle parking
Choosing a green travel route to Rebel should be both easy and safe. That's why we offer a large and secure indoor bicycle parking with space for 250 bicycles for our tenants and visitors.
To make everyday cycling even smoother, we have equipped the room with its own charging options for electric bikes, as well as a dedicated maintenance station where you can easily pump up tires, tighten brakes and get a quick service before pedaling on.
Circular design
Reuse with a twist
All inventory on Rebel , from workstations to social zones, are carefully selected with a focus on quality so they will last a long time. But sustainability is also about giving new life to what already exists.
That's why we've chosen to furnish several of our conference halls, meeting rooms and common areas exclusively with second-hand treasures. A good example is Auditorium 0101, where the interior is carefully curated through recycled finds from finn.no – giving the room a completely unique and warm atmosphere.
A holistic ecosystem
Sustainability at all levels
On-demand technology
The building is equipped with automated lighting control. Sensor technology ensures that lights are only on in rooms that are in use. Climate-efficient ventilation systems are closely monitored and switched off when conference halls or meeting rooms are empty. This ensures enormous energy savings.
Maximum utilization
A sustainable building is a building that is used as much as possible. Rebel has a hugely high utilization of canteen areas and social zones, and our tenants have access to the building and its facilities 24/7. Sharing spaces means a lower footprint per head.
Waste in the cycle
We are proud of our waste management system where absolutely all waste is thoroughly separated at source. In close collaboration with tenants, our partners and farm owners, we ensure that valuable resources remain in the cycle and that residual waste is minimized to a minimum.
Travel green and easy
Rebel is located in the middle of the city, making it easy to choose a sustainable travel route. The bus stops right outside, the tram is in the immediate vicinity, and the Nationaltheatret station is just a few minutes away on foot.
Science-based climate goals
The building is owned by Entra, which has committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions throughout the value chain to net zero by 2050 (SBTi verified). Through active management, we work together for a climate-neutral future.
Food with a good conscience
The Food Hub, which operates all catering at the house, is Miljøfyrtørn certified. This means strict requirements for raw material purchasing, energy use and minimization of food waste. Local and sustainable food is the standard, whether it's lunch or a banquet dinner.
Rebel and sustainability
Rebel has chosen to make sustainability an important focus in everything we do. Instead of building new, we have transformed an existing building into a professional and social meeting place in Oslo, where innovative use of previously dark areas has ensured optimal utilization of the building structure.
On Rebel we follow the same principles and overall strategy as our farm owner, Entra. In parallel, we actively seek conscious and responsible partners at all levels of our operations. This means that we aim to be environmentally leading, and to lead by example when it comes to environmental concerns, footprint and general impact. It should be profitable for both us and our customers to choose environmentally friendly solutions. At Rebel We utilize all areas and zones to the best of our ability, and sustainability is considered in the design of all our meeting and conference rooms. The goal is that as much space as possible is used in the best possible way by as many people as possible.
Our building is equipped with automated lighting control. Sensor technology ensures that lights are only on in rooms that are in use, which contributes to significant energy savings. In addition, we have invested in climate-efficient ventilation systems. These are carefully monitored so that they are only active when needed. For example, when the conference rooms are empty, the ventilation is turned off, and only activated again when the room is in use. We are also proud of our waste management system where everything is sorted at source.
Rebel has a very high utilization of the canteen area and social zones. Tenants can use the entire building 24/7.
All fixtures, from furniture to workstations, are carefully selected based on quality, so that they can last a long time. A former underground parking garage has been transformed into a vibrant center filled with conference facilities, a catering area, a commercial kitchen, changing rooms and bicycle parking, making previously unused spaces useful and a gathering place for many.
We have a strong focus on reuse and recycling. Whether it's building materials or furniture, we have a strong commitment to the environment, which is reflected in our impressive sorting rate of 93%. Several social zones and meeting rooms are furnished with second-hand furniture.
Rebel is centrally located in Oslo and has very good connections with public transport. We encourage everyone to travel here in an environmentally friendly way. Our bicycle parking has space for around 250 bicycles.
Our client, Entra, and Rebel's dedication to sustainability was recognized in 2022 when Rebel won the prestigious City Award. To receive this honor, we had to deliver on all three dimensions of sustainability: social and societal, physical environment/climate, and economic. This means that Rebel not only prioritizes the environment, but also ensures that we add positive value to the local community, while maintaining a healthy economy.
Rebel encourages tenants to choose green means of transport on their commute. One initiative is a large bicycle garage that offers safe parking for around 250 bicycles.
